It is a widely-believed myth that in the United States military all personnel are required to initiate a salute to a Medal of Honor recipient, regardless of rank. Nothing in United States military regulations relates specifically to the Medal of Honor except for its order of precedence on the uniform. Custom, however, does dictate that a general should salute a private if the private has the Medal of Honor, the same convention applies in the United Kingdom to holders of the Victoria Cross and in the Netherlands to holders of the Military Willems Order. When does the commander in chief have to render a salute to a soldier first?
The Commander in Chief is NOT required to render a salute to someone wearing the Medal of Honor, as he is technically not part of the millitary. However, when presenting the award to a deserving member of the military, the CoC WILL salute the individual immediately after the presentation. When does the commander in chief have to render a salute to a soldier first?
If the soldier is a Medal of Honer recipient!
Another time that the CoC might ';customarily'; render a salute is at a funeral. Generally all members salute the casket, and it may be the custom for the President to do the same, but the fact that he isn't in the military is why he doesn't HAVE to salute, ever! Technically, he doesn't even have to return salutes, either.
when they have a medal of honor.
NO he MUST return any salute that he receives.
When the soldier is the holder of the medal of honor. The medal Of Honor is the highest honor anyone in the military can get so even the commander in chief has to honor that honor.
KSM Sir, You are virtually correct as indeed are the others who answered in similar manner albeit minor variations. In the UK (being a Brit %26amp; a retired military man) all holders of the VC are automatically saluted by all ranks without exception. Converesly thay also have an honorary title when referred to in the House of Commons and Lords. I may add that on occassion whenever senior ranking British officers have failed to thus honour this tradition (which is what it is - to my knowledge never having been set forth in print) much ado has been raised and one hell of a ticking off handed out to the miscreant wretch who so offended!
And I might add quit rightly so!
As indeed pointed out herein, a nations highest award is at all times to be saluted - thus automatically / jointly honouring both the recipient and the honour bestowed.
what?!?
He is not required to salute anyone. He does it because he's a humble man who loves this nation.
