Canon of Paleolithic Cave Art


-Subjects


oAnimals (deer, bison, reindeer, horse), humans, handprints, abstract signs %26amp; symbols (zigzags %26amp; dots)


Animals can be in groups or separated


All caves contain variety of animals


oAbsence of landscape/vegetation


oInconsistent ground lines/baselines


oInconsistent scale


oAnimals shown in profile


oEyes sometime frontal


oTwisted perspective


oVariety of positions/poses/stances


oUse of natural rock shape to suggest shape of animal


oWalls not prepared in any way


oMinimal spatial depth


o“super imposition” – stacking of subjects





Technique %26amp; Location


-found in deepest of cave; deep recesses of the cave


-painting, sculpture, scraping


-handprints made by chewing of the pigment and spraying by mouth onto hand stencil


-Colors used: black, red, orange, white. (no greens or blues)





Uses for Cave Art


-for advancement of tribe; for the good of the entire group


-not for individual glorification or decorations
